According to a study published online December 10, 2017 in the Journal of Pediatrics, women exposed to air pollution (PM2.5) just prior to conception or during the first month of pregnancy are at an increased risk of their children being born with birth defects. The strongest influences of PM2.5 on individual malformations were found with abdominal wall defects and hypospadias.
